Five Things Every car owner needs

Whether you are a new buyer or an experienced driver, you need some essential things in your car. These things can be for everyday use or worst-case scenarios when you get stuck on the road.

Buying a new car is a matter of great responsibility. Regular maintenance comes along with being the owner of a vehicle. Though you can depend on the towing services most of the time, there are still instances when a minor tweak here and there can save you a lot of time and money.

Let’s get to know the 5 essential things every car owner need

First Aid Kit

A first aid kit is an inexpensive item that every car owner should have in their vehicle. Accidents can happen anytime, and real danger might be just around the corner. You might end up in a bad situation in a remote area, and that’s when the first aid kit is the only medical help you can get. It can be a life-saver for the passengers travelling on long routes with less connectivity. So it’s highly recommended that you keep the first aid kit in your vehicle containing all the basic medicines and bandages.

A Spare Tire with a Lug Wrench and Jack

A flat tyre is probably the most common issue you will face as a car owner. The funny thing is that it mostly happens when you least expect it. You need to always have a spare tyre in your car as it saves a lot of time.

Jumper Cables

A dead car is never a pretty sight and causes a lot of frustration for you. Your car could die when the battery weakens to a point where the car cannot start. In such a situation, you need jumper cables that help to jumpstart your battery. You will not need to head to the repair shop if you have someone who has a car battery near you. These jumper cables are used to charge one battery through another.

WD-40 protects metal from rust and corrosion, penetrator stuck parts, displaces moistures and lubricates. There are so many uses for WD-40 in everyday life. Of course, this is an important thing to have in a car. From loosening lug nuts and lubricating a creaky door to having to switch a license plate. WD-40 has righteously deserved its place in your trunk.

What To Do If Your Car Overheats

Today’s cars are equipped with multiple heat sensors and computer-controlled electric fans designed to keep your engine running in any weather. But overheating can still happen. Continue reading on to learn the best ways to prevent an overheated car and steps you can take in the event that your car begins to run hot.

Why Do Engines Overheat?

Engines can overheat for many reasons. In general, it’s because something’s wrong within the cooling system and heat isn’t able to escape the engine compartment. The source of the issue could include a cooling system leak, faulty radiator fan, broken water pump, or clogged coolant hose.

Regardless of the problem’s source, an overheating engine isn’t something you want to let linger. Your engine could sustain serious, if not permanent, damage.

Signs Your Engine is Overheating

If you’re able to take steps to cool your engine before it overheats to the point of failing, you may reduce the risk of irreversible engine damage. But first, you’ve got to notice the symptoms of overheating, which can include:

  • Steam (which can look like smoke) coming from under the car hood.
  • An engine temperature gauge on your dashboard that spikes to “H” or into the red. (Engine temperature gauge symbols vary, so consult your owner’s manual.)
  • A strange smell coming from the engine area. For example, leaking coolant can smell sweet while leaking oil might smell more burnt.

As soon as you notice the engine overheating, take the following steps and contact your nearest repair shop.

1. Kill the A/C and crank the heat

Immediately turn off the air conditioner to reduce stress on the engine. Then, turn the dial to maximum heat. This can help pull heat away from the engine to keep it from overheating until you can pull over in a safe location. You may get a little hot yourself, but a few minutes of discomfort is a small price to pay compared to major engine repairs.

2. Find a safe place to pull over

Pull over and shut off the car. Allow the engine to cool for at least 15 minutes. Keep an eye on the temperature gauge, as it should move back to a normal range as the engine cools.

While you’re waiting (and watching the gauge), put together a plan to get your overheated engine checked out. Call a friend or Carhoot for Roadside Assistance.  We’ll dispatch a trained mechanic to check your car and see what the problem is.

3. Sit tight

It will take at least 15 minutes for the engine to cool. In the meantime, do not attempt to open the hood; the coolant in a car that has overheated may be in excess of 230 degrees.Once the hood is open, there’s a risk of being sprayed with hot water or steam. Your personal safety is most important. Waiting for at least 15 minutes allows the hood, engine and leaking coolant to cool.

3. Check and add coolant (if you have it)

If your coolant level is low, a quick top-off could help protect your engine and prevent overheating until you can get things fixed. However, this step won’t do much good if a coolant hose is clogged or the source of your troubles is a broken radiator fan or water pump. Consult your owner’s manual to find the location of your coolant reservoir tank and to learn how to add coolant to your vehicle.

5. Drive to a service station

If your car isn’t being towed, now’s the time to carefully restart your engine and drive to your nearest auto repair shop. Keep an eye on the temperature gauge as you drive. If it rises again, pull over and let the system cool.A professional will need to inspect your car’s cooling system. And take notice of everything, like fluid under the car or steam under the hood.

Important things to consider before buying a car

Buying a car is a dream come true for  many people and is a big achievement. So if you are looking for one, congratulations on this big step!

We know choosing the right car is not easy for most people, especially if you are not a car pro or enthusiast. With hundreds of models to choose from, where do you even start? You may have your dream car  in mind, but your budget might not agree. Do you buy a car locally or import one from Japan? These are some of the decisions you will have to make.

Luckily, you don’t have to do this alone.Carhoot is here to guide you on the most important things to look for when buying your car

Here are a few questions you need to ask yourself before you make that decision

Does it fit my needs?

This question is important because it helps you to decide on what car you want.

Do you want a car to move you from point A to B, or do you want a family car? Or perhaps you want a car for business. You need to know why you want the car so that you can make the best decision that will meet your needs.

Do you want a new/used car

After you have narrowed down on what you want and you are comfortable with its pros and cons, now you can decide whether you want a new car or a used one.

If you choose to import a new one you have to consider all the costs that come with it and if you can afford it. Importing a car takes about two months so you have to be a bit patient.

If you decide on buying a used one there are a lot of things you need to confirm too. Check the Mileage to avoid getting a really old car and have the car inspected to avoid getting junk. It’s also important to Cross reference the ownership  details just to be sure the car belongs to the person selling you the car. Remember this is Kenya, and you can get conned properly😂

What is my budget?

Your budget may be the most important factor to consider when buying your first car.

How much do you want to spend, and where is it coming from? Are you buying it from your savings, a bank loan, or a combination of both? You may find it more practical to set a budget range and then decide on an acceptable vehicle within that range. We all have that dream car that we would want but may not afford as a first car. After evaluating your needs, income and expenses that will come with that car, you will develop a logical budget for a vehicle.

Are the Spare parts available locally?

It will be less stressful when you choose a car model that has spare parts that are available locally. Buying a car should be fun and not stressful. Cars with available spares are easy to maintain.

Fuel Consumption

With the rise of fuel prices rising every now and then in our country, it’s important to get a car that offers you good fuel economy. After all you don’t  want a car that will drain you financially.

Are you in the market for your first car but you are still not sure what to buy? Are you wondering whether you should buy locally or import? Our  team at Carhoot is ready to answer all your questions and help you make a decision that you will be happy with. You can download the carhoot app or call us directly on 0720 039039. 5 Car Battery Maintenance Hacks for Every Car Owner

The thing about life is, doing things ‘early” often saves us a lot of heartache and pain. This rule makes no exception when it comes to cars. Preventative maintenance doesn’t only just lower costs but can contribute heavily to vehicle safety and saving lives. Maintaining your battery can also help reduce overall maintenance costs, enhance your travel experiences and improve your car’s productivity.

The best part is, it’s not rocket science and with these few tips, you can be well on your way to becoming a better car owner…because car batteries matter way more than we know!

1. Clean Your Car Battery Regularly

Taking a few minutes every week to check your car battery each week is something every driver should make a habit of doing. It probably sounds annoying but it’s not as annoying as the quote of a new battery. Cleaning your battery ore regularly is even more important if you live in high humid areas like Kisumu or Mombasa. Car batteries and the areas around them tend to attract corrosion, and the build-up of this may lead that cost a lot to fix.

Keep some dielectric grease handy at home and use it to clean your battery terminal area regularly. If you notice any signs of corrosion and dirt already starting to build up, find an ammonia-based window cleaner and use it to get rid of the corrosion.

2. Pay Attention To The Signs

Ignorance is bliss, but not with cars. The most obvious sign that something may be wrong with your battery is if the battery indicator light starts blinking. It often means that your car’s charging system is faulty but it could still be other issues. If your battery is not in the best condition, you will probably know. Signs like the intensity of your headlights being low or your car taking longer than usual to start are some common indicators that it may be time for a replacement or that your battery isn’t charging enough.

If your car battery dies, don’t stress out. Just log on to Carhoot and take advantage of our Car Recovery services, we will have someone ready to help you jump start your car or replace your battery in minutes. Also, if you notice signs of your battery cracking or any acid leaking, DO NOT use a jump start cable!

3. Be Wise About How You Use Your Car’s Accessories

Car maintenance is all about being able to manage how you use all the features of your car. Car’s are built with the primary purpose of generating enough power to move us from point A to B. Everything else is secondary. Excessive use of some secondary features can shorten the life span of your car battery considerably.

Limit the use of Bluetooth and car headlights to when only when necessary

4. Check the Water Levels

If the electrolytes in your car battery are low, the plates will be exposed and you will be able to see them. This can easily be fixed by topping up the cells with water and making sure they are all covered before charging it or driving around for a few days.

Use only distilled water to fill your car battery cells if it is running low. Using other liquids may reduce your car’s battery life span.

5. Go On A Road Trip Once In A While

Aside from being incredibly fun, road trips or long drives help keep your battery properly charged.

Mazda CX-5 -The Best Looking Crossover SUV In The Market

When it comes to any sort of design, there are three types of reactions, yes, no and WOW! There’s no question where the Mazda CX-5 falls. Instantly desired by both male and female drivers, its sleek modern curves are elegant in their simplicity, yet embody a sense of strength when you take a closer look. The thing about this car, it’s as pretty on the inside as it is on the outside. Specially designed to give consumers every ounce of luxury through its superior interior design, and impressive technological features. The CX-5 has managed to stand out in a highly competitive space in a very short time, stealing the spotlight from other crossover SUVs such as the Toyota Rav-4, Honda CRV, Mitsubishi Outlander and Volkswagen Tiguan that have previously dominated the space.

The Car That Keeps On Giving!

Choice, Performance & Efficiency

Spoilt for choice is an understatement when we dive deeper because the 2014 Mazda CX-5 comes in 3 engine options. The 2.5-Litre SKYACTIV-G petrol engine, the 2.2 Litre SKYACTIV-D diesel engine and a 2.0 Litre SKYACTIV-G petrol engine. All of these are linked to a 6-speed Electronically Controlled Automatic Transmission and are available in both 2WD and 4WD. If we really had to make a choice we would probably lean towards the Maxda CX-5 25S or the Mazda CX-5 25S L Package. They both have 2.5L petrol engines, 4WD, DVD/Navi system with Bose audio, and steering controls . The differences come with the wheels, seats and drive. The 25S has 18-inch alloy rims and automatically operated cloth seats while the 25SL has electrically powered leather seats, both 2WD & 4WD as well as 19-inch alloy rims. The 2.5L CX-5 consumes petrol at a rate of 15.2 Km/L making it extremely efficient when it comes to fuel consumption. Its diesel counterpart fares better at 18.6 Km/L but honestly, whichever model you choose, fuel consumption won’t keep you up at night.

Handling, Maintainance & Parts

The Mazda CX-5 is a dream to drive thanks to its solid suspension and perfectly weighted steering. We love how stable it feels on the road, and even on corners, there is very little body rolling. It’s no surprise that the petrol engine takes a bit more time to accelerate but once it does, it moves like the wind. The diesel version isn’t afraid to showcase its powerful engine and accelerates quite fast. The CX-5 requires minor service after around 10,000 km and major service after the recommended 15,000km. Sourcing body parts locally has been a problem for many Mazda owners but with Carhoot, things have gotten much easier. Owners can easily schedule major and minor service, have their cars conveniently picked up and dropped off and say goodbye to the stress of hunting for parts on their own! The app is free to download on both Google Play and the App Store.

How Safe is The 2014 Mazda CX-5?

You’ll be happy to learn that the CX-5 has continuously scored good ratings in rear crash protection, roof strength, and side-impact crash. It has a complementary control system with anti-lock brakes, stability and traction control, as well as airbags, a side blind spot alarm system for the 2.5-litre, and smart city brakes support in its safety measures package. The Smart City Brake Support controls the car’s speed at certain intervals in case of detection of a possible risk of collision. Our only critique would be the limited number of airbags are few and the rear quarter vision feature which has been known to affect clear visibility. The Grand Tour Model makes up for this with a rearview camera that gives drivers more visibility when driving.

The Eco-Friendly Sky Active Engine

It is no secret that cars are one of the leading sources of CO2 emissions across the world, and many automakers are doing the best to develop affordable and eco-friendly vehicles. The Mazda CX5 is quite environmentally friendly with its engine technology only allowing small emissions of CO2. Mazda’s relentless efforts in green practices have borne fruit. Through their lean manufacturing quality control policy, they have been able to successfully implement Skyactiv G engine technology to reduce carbon emissions.

Final Thoughts?

The 2014 Mazda CX-5 is a worthwhile investment, extremely economical to use and maintain and looks amazing! If you are interested in getting yourself this or any other car, talk to our import agents on WhatsApp. You’ll be blown away by just how smooth they can make the car import process for you.

Is the Car Front of You Really a Toyota?

A couple of years ago, the popular slogan, “The car in front of you is always a Toyota” was not just true but a staple of Kenyan road culture. Even children related the Toyota brand to cars the same way many of us who grew up in a certain generation, still refer to all soaps as Omo. The automotive industry in Kenya may seem small when viewed from a global perspective, but we are making subtle waves that have caught the attention of some of the world’s largest automakers. The people at Toyota know just how much we as Kenyans trust the brand and have been extremely strategic in ensuring that the slogan rings true for years to come.

Toyota has invested considerably in assembling its most popular models locally. The fact the President is also keen to create more local jobs by encouraging the creation of local car assembly plants has been an added feather to their already stuffed cap. According to the Business Daily in an article published last month, the number of vehicles assembled locally has gone up by 2.2% Assemblers like Toyota benefit heavily from a 25% exemption on import duty on completely knocked down parts headed to assembly lines. This incentive has mostly benefitted the commercial and government sectors who are the biggest consumers of pickups, buses and trucks. The preference for second-hand cars means that majority of new personal use cars are imported fully built.

Putting Local Driver Logic To The Test…

Many Kenyans have learnt never to compromise on quality when buying cars, and for many, this lesson has been through a baptism of fire! The key reason Toyota still commands the largest market share is due to its unwavering quality. Ask anyone on the street and the answer will promptly roll off their lips. Toyota’s are known not as just reliable but as the most reliable and affordable cars. The fact that fuel efficiency remains the most important criterion for Kenyan vehicle owners irrespective of gender, age, ownership history and vehicle brand also makes it easier to guess why every other driver in the country is behind the wheel of a Toyota. They consume fuel like a dream and are known to be very pocket-friendly. The however isn’t the case anymore, as prices of Toyota models have steadily risen over the last few years. The presence of Toyota Kenya has also heavily influenced buying decisions, as many owners willingly part with their hard-earned cash for peace of mind knowing that they can easily get original spare parts and quality service checks directly from the manufacturer.

The Powerful Lure Of German Machines

The continuous escalation of Toyota prices has paved the way for German car brands to acquire larger shares of the local car market. From the beginning of time, Mercedes-Benz and BMW have captured the world with their stunning designs and luxurious appeal. These cars scream money, power, and most of all status. They provide an indescribable feeling when you are behind the wheel, and for many years these cars were very unattainable and privy to only those whose pockets were deep enough. Access to financing solutions and the clever marketing popularised by driver communities have led to more and more german model purchases. Whats’s better than driving a car that makes everyone see you as a boss and fun road trips with like-minded individuals?

Brands like Audi and Volkswagen are not being left behind and their increased popularity has seen them rise up the ranks. The assembly facility, which it opened in December 2016, in Thika, Kenya, was the first semi-knockdown operation Volkswagen established as part of its sub-Saharan Africa expansion strategy. Its line up boasts the famous Tiguan, Caddy and favourite Vivo Polo that seen VW grow its market share to 5.3%. However, the biggest hurdle these German brands collectively face is their steep cost of maintenance and the struggle of sourcing genuine parts. They also have the reputation of being guzzlers and with current fuel prices, drivers today who have been affected negatively by the COVID-19 economic downturn will lean towards more economical options, despite their heart’s desires.

Prioritising Safety When Making Car Purchase Decisions.

While road accidents continue to plague the nation, the government-sanctioned movement restrictions have forced a large number of Kenyans to park their cars and work from home. RTA’s have gone down, but there have been spikes mostly attributed to driver error and poor vehicle maintainece every single time lockdown is lifted. The cars we drive can go a long way in protecting both passengers and pedestrians, and our team at Carhoot can not emphasize enough the importance of researching and verifying the safety of any car you want to buy.

But safety goes above and beyond road accidents. When we talk about safety we also make sure our clients are aware of which cars put a target on your back. Auto theft is a huge issue in Kenya, especially for those of us who live in towns and cities. It is no longer a secret that certain makes and models put drivers at higher risk because of the demand for spare parts and scrap metal in the black market. The auto-theft cartels have forced drivers today to opt for cars that have better security features because honestly, any price that gives you and your family safe and protects your investments is worth it.

Why The Subaru X.T. Is One Of The Safest Crossover SUVs On The Road?

According to an Automotive Consumer Insight Report by Deloitte East Africa in 2018, safety ranked as the 2nd most important criterion by Kenyan drivers after fuel efficiency and was closely followed by value for money. Road safety is a huge issue and the cars we drive can greatly influence the number and lives we can save and protect. With the 2014 Subaru XT, it is clear that a lot was put into consideration. From the investments to improve driver visibility to the 4-wheel-disc rear and front brakes…Subaru drivers have more control. How Much Fun Can You Have While Driving The XT? Tech & Infotainment

Those road trips to Naivasha are sure to be fun and filled with great music thanks to the in-built 440 watts Harman Kardon audio system. It can easily be linked to your phone thanks to Subaru’s Star Link touchscreen and cloud services that we highly recommend. The XT’s in-car entertainment also comes with a radio data system, auxiliary audio input, and external media controls. If you were wondering about BlueTooth, it comes with that too. The Eye-Sight systems are a great bonus and use windshield-mounted cameras to detect obstacles on the road. It can spot safety risks up to 8 meters ahead and can engage the brakes with just 0.4g weight in case it detects a possible collision! The clever people at Subaru refer to this as a “blind-spot minimization strategy,” and we can’t help but think of all those poor bumpers that could have been saved if every car and driver made use of this tech!

Design and Styling

The XT is quite a comfortable ride for both drivers and passengers. Taller people can now stretch even more without affecting the rest of us thanks to the added 35 mm, which is approximately 1.4 inches longer than its predecessor. Comfortability in the front seat has been improved by adjustability features, power-adjustable lumbar support for the back, and a front-head room of 40.0 inches. The cargo space has also been increased significantly making any road trips whether to shagz or just for fun much easier. For ease of entry and exit into the car, the doors have an extra 355 mm and visibility improved by moving the front mirror to the front doors. They also added a compartment separator to the interior, and a 110V power outlet kit, an auto-dim mirror compass, and all-weather floor mats.

The 2014 Subaru XT is a beautiful and reliable car that’s is as fun to drive as it is as easy to maintain. The fact that you can drive fast as well as easily manage fuel consumption is honestly every driver’s dream. Safety has also been greatly improved compared to previous models, not just in terms of driving and accidents but also in regards to theft. The XT is not an easy car to steal, and will probably stay off the list of Nairobi’s infamous theft cartels. Lastly, its versatility under multiple conditions makes it a great vehicle for a wide range of terrain. From smooth city streets, and steep hills to the rugged paths of rural areas, this baby can handle it!

A Beginners Guide To Car Service

We all love our cars. For some of us, they are like our babies. We name them, we take care of them, and have some of the best experiences of our lives in them. From the moment we own them, they become important aspects of our everyday lives, and taking care of them is as intuitive as taking care of ourselves. That being said, cars are complex machines, with every version of each model having its own needs and specific modes of care.

When you buy your first car or upgrade and get a new model, it is important to take the time to understand the condition and needs of your vehicle. As a driver, having this basic knowledge and skills can help you save costs and identify problems early on before they become dangerous and even more costly. This beginner’s guide to car service provides easy tips that focus on three important areas; fluid maintenance, tire servicing, and the cooling system.

Fluid Maintenance

Manuals are important resources that give car owners first-hand information on repair and maintenance. Therefore, the first step is to always create time to read through the manual to acquaint yourself with some mechanical ideas and take a hands-on approach in the servicing process and realize long-term cost benefits by doing so. In this beginners guide, the car manual covers the car fluids such as engines, battery fluid, transmission fluid, brake fluid and power steering fluid.

Engine fluid

The engine fluid is the engine oil. The manual indicates the maximum capacity of the fuel tanks and therefore, you can always check the level of the oil using a dipstick. Check the level of engine oil and water regularly or at certain predefined intervals specified in your manual. The following steps should be followed during the checking process:

  1. Ensure the engine is turned off

  2. Clean the dipstick before dipping it into the fuel tank

  3. Dip the dipstick back

  4. Take it out again and read the fuel level.

Brakes Fluid

Check the reservoir and ensure the indicated minimum and maximum fluid levels are not surpassed – there is no need of removing the lid during the check-up. The minimum-maximum mark is critical such that the brake fluid should always be in between the two points. The dashboard light of your car can help know when the brake fluid levels are lower than required.

Power Steering Fluid

Ensure the power steering fluid reservoir is clear to visibility to enable you to see the fluid level. Use a dipstick if the visibility of the reservoir is not clear.

Transmission Fluid

Locate where the transmission fluid is reserved with the aid of your manual and use a dipstick to check the fluid levels.

Battery Fluid

The car’s battery should always be in good condition. If the battery has signs of corrosion there could be some leaks. In this case, replace the battery carefully ensuring that you do not come into contact with the leaking acid. In case the battery fluid is low, refill it using water and do not discharge it excessively because it may overheat and cause other problems.

Tire Servicing

Purchasing tires with the right specifications

The manufactures always indicate the specifications of the tires and this can also be available in the manual. The specifications range from the size of the tire to pressure, to temperature and standard measures are provided for each aspect to achieve the car’s maximum utility.

Checking the Tire Pressure

Pressure gauges are used to check the amount of tire pressure. If you already have one, proceed with the following steps:

  1. Ensure your tires’ temperatures are low – the best time to measure pressure is during cold hours.

  2. Check the manual to confirm the recommended tire pressure.

  3. Insert the gauge onto the valve.

  4. Fill the pressure while reading on the pressure gauge.

  5. Stop refilling when the desired amount of pressure is reached – this can be the same as the recommended pressure in the manual.

  6. Put back the valve cap.

Changing Tires

Ever experienced a flat tire along the highway during a family excursion? I know it feels frustrating especially if one is unable to change the tires by themselves and the nearest garage is some miles away. Changing tires is imperative and inevitable when the tire leaks due to a puncher. Here is a guideline on how to change the tire:

  1. Have the right tools in place.

  2. Place the car on level ground and apply the right brakes.

  3. You can use wheel chocks by placing them opposite to the wheels you are replacing. If replacing the front tire place it in the rear wheels.

  4. Open the nuts but do not remove them first.

  5. Lift the car using the jack.

  6. Remove the flat tire and replace it with the spare one.

  7. Close the nuts on the spare tire.

  8. Lower the car.

The Cooling System: How to Flush

  1. Take a look at the manual to understand the cooling system and be able to locate each component.

  2. Drain the cooling system via the radiator

  3. Remove the thermostat located at either the upper or lower radiator hose.

  4. Flush out the water until the cooling system is clear.

  5. Reinstall the thermostat and ensure the reservoir is disconnected

  6. When fully drained, refill the cooling system with manufacturer-recommended distilled water.

The Economics Of Cars: The Value Of Transparent Pricing When It Comes To Car Care In 2021

Why do most people feel overcharged after a trip to the garage? Why also do most drivers, whether male or female find going to the garage as scary or uncomfortable as a trip to the dentist? (No offence to any dentist! )It’s because people can tell the difference when they are seen as real and valuable consumers versus being seen as human cash signs. For most drivers in Africa and particularly Nairobi, the only forms of expenditure they can constantly control when it comes to their cars are fuel and insurance costs.

Peace of Mind Comes At A Price

The consistent need for vagueness and mystery by mechanics and car care providers when it comes to their services has led to the growth of a world of mistrust. People are sick and tired of not knowing where their hard-earned cash is going to, every time their car needs a repair. It makes absolute sense why with increased disposable income, and improved standards of living, many drivers living in urban centers today flock towards established car service centers and dealerships, despite the costs.

Drivers Are Becoming Smarter & So Should The Services They Receive

There was a time when the relationship between mechanics and car owners used to be as precious as that of a man and his barber. A quote or estimate would be accepted with little complaint…after all, who else would the driver turn to? Today’s African drivers are smart millennials who are accustomed to using the tools available to them to make the best possible decisions for their lifestyles. Thanks to the internet, many drivers – especially the new ones will use their time to hunt for the best-reviewed and trusted car care services in their area. They leave nothing to chance because they understand the true cost of their trust. With all the options and information available, consumers are overwhelmed with choice and their only burden is whether they are willing to put in the effort it takes to make better decisions. Many will even follow the social media accounts of the service providers who have managed to capture their interest, and the real G.O.A.T.s will even DM pre-existing customers to confirm whether what they are saying online is true.

Why? Because cars are aspirational and highly valued assets that contribute to a person’s status in society. With the investments they have made into acquiring these new symbols of status, today’s drivers’ are willing to spend more on car care services as long as they are assured they have placed their trust with the right brand, receive the necessary data they need to plan their spending and get quality personalized support.

Technology & Digitization Is Making Transparency Easier To Achieve.

Before the dawn of the digital era happened, almost every garage in Kenya operated on word of mouth quotations and handwritten invoices (some still do). The only way to verify the actual cost of a part or service was the word of a“trusted mechanic,” who often used your choice of attire or gender as a price guide. Today, any and every mechanic in the continent is a Google Search away from being branded as trustworthy or not. But just because drivers can search, or call to make sure they aren’t being conned; doesn’t mean they should. According to Jodie L. Ferguson and Pam Scholder Ellen’s publication on the Transparency in pricing and Its Effect On Perceived Price Fairness, “When the consumer is presented with a price increase, transparency in pricing may help the consumer to understand the economic rationality of the seller’s decision to set that price” By being proactive with costing, members of the local auto-care industry could benefit from a much-awaited show of trust and avoid the negative assumptions that come with unexplained costing.

Today, digital innovations such as prescriptive analytic tools and smartphone applications for cars such as Carhoot are treading where no local auto-care brand has gone. By placing everything in the hands of the drivers, these tech tools are erasing decades of mistrust within seconds. With this newfound control, Kenyan drivers are able to select services based on their current and immediate car care needs and receiving on-demand information, pricing and support in regards to their needs. Carhoot is doing more than making it easier for drivers to trust Car Care services but is also slowly working towards saving lives.

RTAs (Road Traffic Accidents) in Kenya rose by 60% immediately after the President of Kenya, H.E. Uhuru Kenyatta lifted the national lockdown and a lot of the resulting deaths were wrongly blamed on driver error and drunk driving. Poor vehicle maintenance was ranked as one of the top 5 causes of RTAs in Kenya between 2016–2019 according to the NTSA. Thanks to COVID-19 and health safety regulations, many people used their cars less, in a bid to stay home but also, fewer people saw the need to actually take care of their cars. The lockdown lift resulted in hundreds and even thousands of people rushing to the roads without even checking their tires. One of the leading reasons people aren’t motivated to practice basic car care practices is because of the fear of the assumed high costs.

Transparent Pricing helps drivers:

  1. Understand just how much they need to plan for future and similar repairs;

  2. Understand whether their current vehicle is an ideal fit for their lifestyle financially;

  3. Properly account for expenditure when it comes to their vehicles;

  4. Enjoy and even be more inclined to seek for car care services;
